Light and water

I so love this water color, it captures me everytime I see it. Painting water is painting light.

What do you see?

Very cool article in Smithsonian about an art historian who teaches a class for police officers to hone their observation and communication skills.Teaching Cops to See

I am not your carpet ride, I am the sky

Today was a long day. I had one of those encounters everyone has at some point, where trust is carefully given then not so carefully dashed by the one you've given it to. I'm not unique in this experience, I know, but it leaves one feeling as if they're the only person in the world. Just a hiccup in the road, really, but I'm feeling sad and regretful.

What was that? Oh yeah...be one with the flux.

I like the picture above - it's a depiction of a hero of Russian folklore, Ivan Tsarevich. Kind of like the Knight of the Swan , he isn't a particular character but a general name given to a particular type of character.

Not a great day off but I got laundry done, got in a good walk, saw a great movie, and now I'm going to curl up with Repairman Jack and read myself to sleep. I'm off again tomorrow - new day, new river.

Someplace like this

Words of wisdom on the importance of living bravely:

"The only calibration that counts is how much heart people invest, how much they ignore their fears of being hurt or caught out or humiliated, And the only thing people regret is that they didn't live boldly enough, that they didn't invest enough heart, didn't love enough. Nothing else really counts at all." - Ted Hughes

Being somewhat shy and introverted (and not always brave), this appeals to me.

I'd like to be someplace like this.

Universum

Remarkably uninspired this week. Tired-ish.

This woodcut --> shows a man peering through the curtain of the atmosphere of a flat earth at the inner workings of the universe.

'Urbi et 'orbi' didn't appear on the original woodcut, but the caption did.

"A medieval missionary tells that he has found the point where heaven and Earth meet...".

Saturday night.
I went:
To the grocery store.
To Barnes & Noble.
Whee.

I might have had a date if I'd hinted around at it, but my pride is too big for that. I like to be asked.

I did need groceries, but really I just wanted to get out of the house. I bought pasta and tapenade, though the tapenade isn't near as good as the stuff I got in California with Tasha.

I whole-heartedly support our small locally-owned bookstore, but sometimes Barned & Noble is a nice change - it's big enough to get lost in, to be unnoticed in. I bought the Rushdie book, and the Barnes book and sat down with a coffee and read. I went from feeling a little pathetic to enjoying myself. Thank you Salman Rushdie, my date for Saturday night.

Water is so difficult to depict. I love Monet's La Grenoulliere because of the water. ^^

$5 CDs

Today I stumbled across Plan-it-X Records, a DIY punk label. While I don't listen to punk much (anymore, anyway), I found it interesting.

"If it ain't cheap, it ain't punk."

Van Gogh's Starry Night ^
Amazing.
